Gang beats up call-taxi driver, flees with the car

The Ambattur estate police have registered a case in which an app-based calltaxi driver was duped and beaten up by three unidentified men, who later fled with his car.

According to police, Shahul Hamid, was returning after dropping a passenger at Ambattur Industrial Estate around 2 am on Sunday when three men on a bike approached him. They allegedly asked Hamid if he could help them in taking their ill friend from Ambattur OT to a hospital in Tambaram. Hamid agreed and followed them to a bus stand where the men got off the bike, dragged Hamid out of the car, beat him unconscious and fled with the car.

They abandoned the bike at the spot.

On regaining consciousness, Hamid lodged a complaint and the police recovered the bike from the bus stand, but no arrests have been made yet. While Hamid is undergoing treatment for his injuries, an officer from Ambattur police station said that a special team has been formed to nab the culprits.

Meanwhile, the Rajamangalam police arrested 30-year-old Radhakrishnan from Padiyanallur at Koyambedu for allegedly stealing cars. Arunagiri, a resident of Rajamangalam, had filed a complaint that his car had gone missing, said a source in the police. It was parked right outside his house, said the complainant.

The police then traced the car to Koyambedu and arrested Radhakrishnan. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
