Differently abled crusader wins Kalpana Chawla award for bravery
Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami handed over the Kalpana Chawla award for bravery to S Preethi of Tiruvannamalai district for her work among those affected by spinal cord injuries at the I-Day function at the secretariat on Tuesday. The award carries a gold medal, a certificate and a cheque.

When Preethi was 18 years, she suffered a freak accident, which left her paralysed from the neck down. During the mishap, the teenager was the youngest member of the TN women’s cricket team starting to represent the state at the age of eight.
Also, a national level swimmer and extremely brilliant in academics, she was one among America’s students and was part of the Who’s Who among American students when she had gone to pursue higher studies.
Following the life changing disability, Preeti started the NGO Soulfree to ensure that those with spinal cord injuries were rehabilitated, and provided education and employment so that they could lead fruitful lives.
Winner of the Karmaveer Chakra Award (instituted by the UN) and the REX Karmaveer Global Fellowship 2016, she holds M.Sc Psychology and B.Sc medical sociology degrees. She also hosted the 2014 India Inclusion Summit.
The state level Kalpana Chawla award is expected to encourage her to do more for society.
