900 infertile cows given hormonal therapy in state

Handling infertility issues does not seem to be restricted to men and women in the state as the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), had recently started a programme to provide hormonal treatment to infertile cows from various districts across the state. Under the programme, in the past six months, over 900 infertile animals have so far being given hormonal treatment.

“As part of the Tamil Nadu Government scheme, farmers were given free cattle and goats three years ago. The cattle which were infertile among them were administered treatment and given supportive therapy for a month,” said Dr Veeramani, Assistant professor and head, farmers training centre, Kancheepuram TANUVAS.

While farmers in Kancheepuram district received the most number of animals, the problem of drought resulted in under nutrition among most of them. “Of the 900 animals that we administered this therapy to, 450 were from Kancheepuram,” Dr Veeraman said.

This scheme to treat infertile animals was sanctioned recently along with another to extend animal ambulance service across the state. Stating that post the supportive therapy, animals are selected for the hormonal treatment, Cecilia Joseph, Professor and Head, Department of Clinic, Madras Veterinary College, said, “A kit is inserted into the vagina of the cow and left there for nine days.

The kit, that has a sponge containing the hormone progesterone IP 400, is removed on the ninth day, after which the cow immediately enters heat. The cow is inseminated on the 11th and 13th day. This is known as ‘timed insemination’.”

TANUVAS had conducted 30 camps in Kancheepuram for the same. Around 280 cows were reported pregnant. The other districts covered, include Trichy, Thanjavur, Namakkal and Madurai.
