Two persons who were in possession of the sea cucumbers were arrested. During the regular patrolling forest officials had stopped two men carrying two blue colour plastic cans at Serankottai coastal area in Rameswaram.

When the cans were checked, they saw sea cucumbers and seized them. Following that the duo, later identified as Muniyasamy, from Serankottai, and Indira Kumar, from South Karaiyur near Rameswaram, were apprehended and were handed over to the Wildlife Range office at Mandapam. As the sea cucumbers were live they were let into the sea at Mandapam bridge.

Forest officials said that the sea cucumbers are usually taken for processing. “Once processed they would be smuggled to Sri Lanka for a good sum of money,” explained the officials.
