A section of residents of Kumarettiyapuram village who were on their way to work in the morning noticed a large number of dead peacocks in the barren lands located at the fringes of the village. Immediately, they informed the Eppodumvenran police who, in turn, informed forest officials.

Officials led by Forester Murugan visited the spot and carried out investigation. The locals were also inquired about the reason for the death but they replied that they had no clue. They informed the Forest Officials that citing of peacocks was a regular scene in their village. “It used to be something pleasant to see them strutting around. This is the first time we see such a large number of peacocks dead on the land. It is a heart rending scene,” they rued. Sources said that all the nine dead birds had injuries on their bodies. Officials suspect that the peacocks might have been poisoned. They would have felt drowsy but despite that they would have tried to fly. But they would have fallen to the ground hitting the stones as they fell.

However, all the carcasses of the peacocks were sent to the Nursery of Forest Department at Vilathikulam in Thoothukudi district and post mortem would be carried out by veterinarians. Only after the reports are available anything conclusive would be known, said the sources.
