Riding a bike and a open four-wheeler, Anbumani travelled to water bodies and villages from Mettur Dam and addressed the stakeholders, who would be benefited if the project, pending for more than 25 years, is implemented.
Stating that annually close to 50 TMC of water from the Mettur Dam flowed into the Bay of Bengal, he said that only 10 per cent (5 TMC) is required for this long awaited surplus water scheme. He pointed out that in May 1994 Chairman of Cauvery technical team the late Mohanakrishnan submitted a detailed report for Cauvery-Sarabanga-Tirumanimutharu linkage at a cost of Rs 380 crore.
“But now the revised estimate of the scheme is Rs 1,314 crore,” he said and made an appeal to the state and Union governments to initiate the project to save Salem and Namakkal districts from turning into a desert. He said that implementation of the 182-km-long project would benefit 32,423 acres under cultivation.
PMK president GK Mani accompanied Anbumani.
