SETC adopts new ploy to fleece passengers
The state transport department officials seem to have devised a new way to increase the revenue by converting unfit buses into Express buses and collect extra fare, much to the discomfort of the passengers. Bus travellers complain that though they are made to pay high fares for the tickets, there are not able to travel comfortably in the battered buses operated in the state.

Sources say that many passengers complain that SETC buses that travel a long distance make a lot of noise. Though the conductor and the driver of these buses lure passengers on the pretext of providing better service, the condition of buses ensures that these promises are not met. Further, more number of unfit buses is labelled as Express or point-to-point to attract people.
Even though the fare for the Express or point-to-point bus is collected, the bus stops at all the local areas to fill the seats. “I was persuaded to board the bus to reach Tiruchy by a conductor. He also assured me that there are no stops in between and collected Rs 220, which is equal to Fast express fare,” said K Kamlanathnan, adding that the bus stopped in all the local areas to receive passengers.
“When I argued, the conductor yelled at me saying that I can get down,” he added.
When contacted, a state transport department official said, “We are properly monitoring the issue and we will take action against anyone indulging in such practices.
Efforts are on to procure more buses, including sleeper buses. The state will soon see well equipped buses like other states.”
