One of the pipelines carrying drinking water to Rameswaram which has been laid on the Pamban bridge supplies drinking water to the entire Pamban island. However, due to poor maintenance of the pipeline, it has developed cracks at several places. This resulted in loss of a large amount of drinking water.

Muraleedharan, BJP Ramanathapuram district president, said this kind of negligence by authorities will compound the woes of residents of Rameswaram, who are alrealy reeling under a severe drinking water shortage. “This is a serious issue and needs to be addressed immediately,” he added. When the issue was raised with the Rameswaram Municipality, an official said that the leakage was not brought to their notice as it has occurred on the side of the bridge which could not be easily noticed. The National Highways department needs to discuss the situation and resort to repair works as soon as possible as the pipeline is on the Pamban bridge, said the official.
