Unprecedented security at venue of ruling camp’s General Council meet

With a Bengaluru court staying the GC following Karnataka party secretary V Pughazhendi moving the court, Ramanathapuram MP Anwar Raja stated that it was not the AIADMK GC, but that of the AIADMK Amma and Purathchi Thalaivi Amma. 

Party rules state that the GC has to be convened once a year and the EC once in six months. The general council, when held, has always resulted in far reaching decisions. A GC meet in 2011 after the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s confidante VK Sasikala was ousted for “anti- party activities, KP Munuswamy, who was a minster then, had made derogatory references to Sasikala much to the chagrin Jayalalilthaa’s amusement. 

However, he was to lose his berth when later Sasikala returned to Poes Garden. With AIADMK’s ousted deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran facing a series of setbacks, it is to be seen how he will face the general council. A successful GC will also put an end to interference by Sasikala’s relatives which, in turn, will boost the party morale to retrieve Jaya TV and “Namadhu MGR” newspaper, which are now with Sasikala’s family. 

Meanwhile, Dinakaran supporter and Perambur MLA P Vetrivel’s attempt to stall the GC by moving the Madras High Court ended in failure as also Dinakaran’s proposal to conduct an anti-NEET meeting at Tiruchy on September 16 as Tiruchy police and the city corporation had refused him permission for the venue on various grounds. Dinakaran’s first Chennai political outing - an anti-NEET demonstration in front of the Chennai collectorate on September 9, was cancelled due to court orders.
