Amid growing demand for a trust vote by the Opposition parties, which slammed the Speaker and the state government for disqualifying dissident MLAs, Rao’s return to Raj Bhavan from New Delhi assumes significance as it comes a day after Speaker P Dhanapal disqualified 18 MLAs under the anti-defection law.
Before arriving here, Rao met President Ram Nath Kovind in New Delhi and was said to have discussed the prevailing political situation in TN, especially in the context of disqualification of MLAs. On Tuesday morning, he met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the same issue.
However, AIADMK sources revealed that no appointment was sought nor given as all hopes are pinned on Wednesday’s court’s verdict. Depending on the outcome of the case, AIADMK leaders will decide whether to seek the governor for a floor test or not. With the disqualification of dissident MLAs, EPS is in a comfortable position in the event of a floor test. Rao is expected to stay here until Thursday when he may return to Maharashtra.
