3 drown on last day of Pushkaram festival

S Nagalakshmi (35) from Kumbakonam, along with her daughter Sharmila (12) and son Vimalraj (8), Nagalakshmi’s sister-in-law Kalaiselvi (40) and her daughter Sowmya (12), were at the Chetti bathing ghat. They soon drifted to the middle of the river where water level was deep due to dredging of sand. Kalaiselvi and Sharmila managed to escape, but the other three could not be saved. Fire and Rescue Personnel retrieved the bodies and sent them to Kumbakonam GH for post-mortem. Kumbakonam East police are investigating.
