Meenakshi Amman Temple declared cleanest in India
In a matter of pride for Tamil Nadu, the Meenakshi Amman Temple has been adjudged the cleanest temple in India under ‘Best Swachh Iconic Place’ by the Central Government. Madurai Collector K Veera Raghav Rao and Corporation Commissioner Aneesh Shekar are in New Delhi to receive the award.

Recently, the Union government had announced 10 Swachch iconic places each in Phase-I and Phase-II of the Swachch Bharat scheme. In the first phase, Ajmer Sharif Dargah, CST Mumbai, Golden Temple, Amritsar, Kamakhya Temple, Assam, Maikarnika Ghat, Varanasi, Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri, The Taj Mahal, Agra, and Lord Venkateshwara Temple, Tirupati, were declared as swachch iconic places.
Later, the officials in-charge of all the places were asked to come to New Delhi and showcase all the work undertaken by them to maintain cleanliness. From Madurai, Joint Commissioner, Natarajan, along with officials had gone to New Delhi.
Speaking to DTNext, Natarajan said temple workers keep the premises clean round the clock and as plastics are banned around the temple area, no garbage has accumulated. Even the men appointed by the Chairman of the temple, Karumuthu Kannan, are responsible for cleanliness, Natarajan added. The award would be presented by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in New Delhi on Monday.
