Police arrested a couple on Friday for stocking the rectified spirit and also seized 60 kg of ganja from their house. It is said, the couple Selvakumar (42) and Cauvery (35) from Thanjavur had recently rented out a house at Veeraiah Street near Kumbakonam a few months ago and the neighbours noticed some mysterious activities during night.
Neighbours alerted the police and based on their complaint, a team led by DSP Ganesamurthy monitored the house. The team found that the couple was involved in selling arrack. When a search was organised, the police found 2,380 litres of rectified spirit in 65 cans.
The spirit was seized and the house was raided. Police also found 60 kg of ganja stocked in the house. Later, the police arrested Selvakumar and Cauvery and produced them in the court. They were later remanded in judicial custody.
It may be noted that on August 4, a group of women from Kumbakonam staged a protest claiming arrack sachets are easily available in Kumbakonam and demanded a probe on that. They had also displayed a few sample sachets at the time of demonstration.
