TNCC chief Su Thirunavukkarasar faced no visible threat to his office when he went to New Delhi recently to apprise the high command of the party polls.

Former Congress whip Peter Alphonse and Congress MLA Vasanthakumar and actor-politician Khushbu Sundar were said to be vying for the coveted post in state Congress.

If sources are to be believed, both Peter and Vasanthakumar had requested former union finance minister P Chidambaram to recommend their names. The two leaders were learnt to have met Chidambaram separately in the city in the third week of September and asked him to propose their names to the AICC high command.

Khushbu, who was in New Delhi early this week, was also understood to have persuaded her friends in Rahul Gandhi’s office to raise her to the helm of TNCC. Notably, the TNCC general council which had met over a week ago had resolved to authorise the AICC president to nominate the TNCC president. Significantly, Congress by law also provides for appointing or reappointing the state party chief as soon as the periodical PCC member appointment happens.

“Every time the issue pops up, people rake my name up. Rahulji and Soniaji will take a call on the issue and do what will serve the interest of Tamil Nadu Congress best,” Khushbu told DT Next over phone.

“Change of guard at TNCC helm is likely. There will be some clarity on the issue within a fortnight,” said, one of the TNCC president aspirants under condition of anonymity.
