Long list of diploma, graduates, PG in police appointments

During the recent selection of over 13,000 constables, 1,015 jail wardens and 1,512 firemen, SSLC was the basic educational qualification needed. “The Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNSURB) found that 450 of them were postgraduates, 4,000 graduates and over 1,000 with diplomas,” said DGP JK Tripathy, Chairman, TNUSRB.

Even when constables were recruited in the year 2011 and 2013, a good number of them were graduates. “Now postgraduates are also started joining the police force as constables. From this, one can understand how badly the youth in the state is hit by unemployment,” noted an AR constable from the 2013 batch, who said he wanted to be a part of the profession after watching Tamil movies. 

“Only after joining the force, do we come to know the real situation. It has nothing to do with what we see in reel. It has become a thankless job where we have to work 24x7 without any break and always get abused by the public,” another policeman noted. Officials pointed out that unlike the armed forces, police do not rely on mass recruitment campaigns as a lot of youth prefer a job with the state police for the reason that they will not be posted outside their native states. 

As many as 6.32 lakh candidates – the highest in the history of TNSURB - had applied for the 15,000 plus posts for which written tests were conducted in May this year. 

In 2015, the selectors at TNSURB found that out of the 881 sub-inspectors they had selected, more than 32 per cent were engineering graduates. Of the total 881 male and female sub-inspectors selected in all categories together, 287 were BE graduates, while the rest had degrees in Arts, Science and Commerce, said a senior official of TNUSRB.
