It is said that the bus stand, which was constructed in 1988-89, houses 17 shops. They stated in the petition that the ceiling of the bus stand has been damaged in many areas. Some parts of the ceiling chip off every day. Therefore, the Sub Inspector of the area has sent a petition to the Executive officer of the Karambakudi Town Panchayat to renovate the building.
The police have even stated that commuters face a constant threat of the weak ceiling that may fall any moment.
“Since the building is weak, we fear that it may collapse anytime and before any untoward incidents happen, the panchayat officials should initiate steps either to renovate or replace the existing bus stand building,” the petition further read.
The petition has been forwarded to the District Collector, Superintendent of Police, Assistant Director (Town Panchayats), Tiruchy Region and other revenue officials.
The stand is frequented by buses in sections like Tiruchy- Pattukottai, Pudukkottai, Chennai, Erode, Thanjavur and other parts of the state. “Buses halt here for at least a few minutes. This apart, over 20,000 commuters from as many as 64 villages adjacent to Karambakudi make use of bus stand daily,” said the petition.
