Opposition parties flay govt for not curbing kandhuvatti

Left leaders, MDMK and PMK and other parties on Tuesday condemned the government for not stopping the kandhuvatti menace and demanded stern action on those involved in the business.

Reacting to the death of three persons, who committed self-immolation in Tirunelveli due to kandhu vatti menace, the leaders wanted action to be taken on staff of Achanpudhur police station for not taking action on the kandhuvatti businessmen despite complaints against them. 

MDMK general secretary Vaiko demanded a judicial enquiry into the incident and said explanation should be sought from the district Collector. He also demanded the suspension of police staff in Achanpudhur who failed to take action on complaints against kadhuvatti businessmen. 

PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss alleged that ruling party men and police were supporting kandhuvatti businessmen and said 823 persons had committed suicide in the last seven years due to the menace. CPM state secretary G Ramakrishnan said the staff in Achanpudhur station had supported the kandhuvatti businessmen and did not act on complaints of victims. 

CPI state secretary R Mutharasan said poor people were getting money for exorbitant interest since they could not get loans easily. Despite paying twice the amount received, the family in Tirunelveli was threatened with the help of police men, he said. Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader T Velmurugan and Naam Thamizhar leader P Seeman too demanded action on police and officials who did not take action.
