Tirunelveli Collector launches usury helpline
In a swift action after the death of three persons of a same family, the Tirunelveli district administration, on Tuesday, launched a dedicated helpline to register complaints from those who were harassed by usurers. The number ‘9629711194’ will function in the Collectorate and an attender will answer calls round the clock.

Tirunelveli Collector, Sandeep Nanduri, said that when the helpline receives a call, details about the location of the complainant, nature of complaint and basic details pertaining to the usurer will be ascertained. It will then be passed on to the police station concerned and taluk level revenue officials.
Facts in the complaints will be verified by the police and revenue officials. an officer in the rank of an inspector from the police side and deputy tahsildhar from the revenue department will handle the case.
If facts recorded in the helpline are found to be true, immediate action will be taken on the accused. Subsequently, the helpline desk will be updated about the status of the investigation.
Number of complaints and action taken on them will be reviewed by the officials on a day-today basis.
While police will primarily look into the legal aspects, revenue officials will inquire the issue in a holistic manner, said the Collector.
