Soundarapandian (47) from Usilampatti, was suffering from heart ailment and was admitted to the Madurai GRH.
As doctors advised him not to go in for the surgery and to look out for a new heart, the same was registered as request. As his tissue matched with the Devipattinam youth, doctors decided to go ahead with the surgery. Other parts such as lungs, kidneys and eyes were donated to Chennai, Tiruchi and Arvind Eye Hospital.
As planned, the heart was removed from the youth on Wednesday and was taken in an ambulance to Madurai GRH. Driver Udayakumar covered a distance of 10 kilometres in just eight minutes in the green corridor created for the purpose.
After the heart reached Madurai GRH, a team of 20 doctors carried out the surgery in seven hours and the heart was transplanted on Soundarapandian.
Madurai GRH is the second government hospital in the state, next to Kilpauk hospital, where a heart transplant surgery was successfully carried out.
