The actor also broke his silence on the controversy and said, “Mersal released on Deepavali and has so far received good response from audience. It is currently running successfully in the theatres. However, the film faced a few hurdles even before its release.  In response to this — my colleagues and friends from the industry, the Nadigar Sangam, Tamil Nadu Film Producers’ Council, national political leaders, regional political leaders, media, and the public supported the film and the team. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for this.”

The members of Tamil film fraternity, including Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan appreciated Mersal and spoke against re-censoring the film due to political pressure. BJP leaders in the state opposed to certain dialogues on demonetisation and GST issues, showcasing Modi government’s dream projects in poor light.

After unanimous support, Sri Thenandal Films, which has bankrolled the project, decided not to remove the problematic scenes from the film. Mersal also stars Nithya Menen, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha, SJ Suryah and Vadivelu in pivotal roles.
