Police said Kumar (44), a power loom owner from Karumathampatty, came to the SP office along with his son Rithish Kumar. “He took a can of kerosene and poured the content on himself and his son. When he attempted to set on fire, the police foiled his suicide bid by snatching away the match box. The father and son were then removed from the spot,” police said.
Police inquiries revealed that Kumar had lent Rs 10 lakh to Mohan Raj, a gold jewel trader, in 2015. “Even after two years, Mohan failed to return the money. When Kumar met him a few days ago and asked for the money back, Mohan threatened to file a usury complaint against him,” police said.
Sources claim that the police refused to take the complaint and asked Kumar to speak with Mohan and settle the dispute.
