HMK protests against screening of Mersal
Condemning actor Vijay starrer Mersal for its dialogues allegedly hurting the sentiments of Hindus, members of Hindu Makkal Katchi staged a series of protest in various parts of the state on Sunday.

The dialogues of Mersal movie had created controversies when they carried stinging criticism on various government initiatives including the GST and demonetisation. However, Hindu outfits and parties had claimed that the dialogues of the movie were aimed at Hindu religion alone and even actor Vijay was targeted.
There were various protests against Mersal condemning the dialogues by various parties and on Sunday, the HMK cadres staged protests in various parts of southern districts.
At Nagercoil in Kanniyakumari district, HMK founder Arjun Sampath, headed the protest staged in front of a theatre, in which the movie was screened. HMK cadre raised slogans against the movie and demanded the theater to stop screening it.
Arjun Sampath said that the movie had spoken against construction of Hindu temples and it carried an agenda against Hindu religion. So, the government should immediately take steps to stop screening the movie, he demanded. Similar protests were staged at Dindigul and Ottanchatram. At Dindigul, the protest was staged in front of the Head Post Office and at Ottanchatram it was staged in front of a theater where the movie was screened.
