A tourist van with 15 tourists from Tirupur was on its way to Rameswaram and when the van neared Pamban bridge, driver Rajkumar failed to notice the speed breakers at the entry point of the bridge and drove the van at full speed. Unable to stop the vehicle at the new speed breaker, the driver desperately hit the brake hard and as a result, the van slipped off the road.

The bridge too had turned slippery in the recent rain.  In the incident, 15 persons, who suffered injuries were rushed to Rameswaram GH. The driver Rajkumar suffered a leg fracture and another tourist inside the van, Ranjith Kumar, also suffered serious injuries.

Both were referred to the Ramanathapuram GH for treatment. Sources said that the speed breaker was actually laid recently to control the speed of the vehicles and to reduce the number of accidents on the Pamban bridge.
