Papanasam in Tirunelveli gets highest rainfall

The coastal southern districts, especially, had been receiving good rainfall and Tirunelveli district in particular had registered the maximum rainfall in the region in the past one week. On Sunday too, the rains continued and the total amount of rainfall recorded in the entire Tirunelveli district was 1076 mm. 

Kodumudi received 130 mm, Manimutharu 124.2 mm and Servalaru received 84 mm. While Nanguneri received 90 mm of rainfall, Ambasamudram received 68 mm and Cheranmahadevi received rainfall of 59.2 mm. Because of the downpour, there has been good inflow into the water bodies in the districts. Level of water in the dams is increasing by the day. 

On Saturday, the inflow into Manimutharu dam was 189 cusecs, but on Sunday it drastically increased to 5,386 cusecs. Therefore, the water level rose from 56.4 feet on Saturday to 66.2 feet on Sunday. As the water flow continues to be heavy, bathing has been banned at Manimutharu dam. 

Meanwhile, Palayamkottai and Tirunelveli which had received more than 100 mm of rainfall in a single day recently experienced only a moderate rainfall on Sunday. Palayamkottai received 10.2 mm and Tirunelveli received just 7.2 mm.

As far as other districts are concerned water bodies close to the Western Ghats in Kanniyakumari and Theni districts received heavy inflow of rainwater on Saturday night. Thiruparappu falls in Kanniyakumari district and Suruli falls in Theni district where the water flow was high were closed to tourists.  Similarly, at Rameswaram, there was continuous downpour on Sunday morning causing water stagnation in front of Ramanathaswamy Temple. At Thangachimadam, the sea was rough resulting in high tides.
