Inspect senior citizen homes, government told

The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar had issued the direction after initiating suo motu cognisance of a letter written by a senior citizen Sangameshwaran Krishnan, a resident of a paid senior citizen’s home, known as Pyramid Complex in Coimbatore, alleging foul play at the home. 

The bench on seeking a status report on the issue within two weeks also directed the authorities to consider the letter of Krishnan as a representation and inspect the senior citizen’s home in question to ascertain whether rules, regulations and Government Orders on running of senior citizens home and/or old age homes are complied with. It also sought the authorities to give Krishnan a personal hearing.

The senior citizen in his letter had contended that the promoters have not kept their commitments. Moreover, in contravention of the Government Orders, the promoters are not providing the residents with adequate nutritious food and medical care as promised, he said. He also alleged that misled by promoters in a brochure brought out by them of a life of dignity with food, 24-hour medical care, security, religious and recreational activities and company of persons of the same age group, he along with his wife and mother-in-law moved into the senior citizen’s home after execution of a long-term lease of 20 years.
