Pongal, lone 5-day long weekend next year
Pongal holidays is likely to be the lone-long weekend, comprising 5 days, as the state government released its list of public holidays for 2018, on Wednesday.

A GO issued by Chief Secretary Girija says, the following days have been declared as public holidays: New Year Day (January 1), Pongal (January 14), Tiruvalluvar Day (January 15), Uzhavar Thirunal (January 16), Republic Day (January 26), Telugu New Year (March 18), Mahavir Jayanthi (March 9), Banks Closing Day (April 1), Tamil New Year/ Dr Ambedkar’s Birthday (April 14), May Day (May 1), Ramzan (Idu’l Fitr; June 15), Independence Day (August 15), Bakrid (August 22), Krishna Jayanthi (September 2), Vinayakar Chathurthi (September 13), Muharram (September 21), Gandhi Jayanthi (October 2), Ayutha Poojai (October 18), Vijayadasami (October 19), Deepavali (November 6), Milad-un Nabi (November 21) and Christmas (December 25). Pongal falls on Monday following the second-Saturday weekend.
Whereas pooja holidays which begin on Thursday can be converted into a long weekend provided the following Saturday is availed as leave. As many as four holidays fall on Sundays.
