Trust distributes Rs 75 lakh for higher education

The Vellore-based Universal Higher Education Trust (UHET) handed over Rs75 lakhs to 1,071 students at a simple function at VIT University on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, VIT University Chancellor G Viswanathan said that only through higher education can the nation hope to be on a par with the developed countries. It was with this end in view that UHET started the practice of disbursing financial aid to needy students, to continue their higher education, he added. When UHET started operations in 2011, around 400 students had received help, but over the years, the number had increased, touching 1,071 on Wednesday. Till date, the trust had disbursed Rs. 3.74 crore to 3911 students. Currently, more than 750 persons, who benefitted from UHET’s financial aid, were currently employed in various institutions, he added.
Beneficiaries were from both Vellore district and the Jawadhu hills region abutting Tiruvanamalai district. A number of industry leaders, including ABP group Managing Director, DD Purkayastha, Sakthi Masala founder PC Duraiswamy, Kingsway founder JS Rajasingh, Rotary Club’s District Governor K Jawarilal Jain and VIT’s Vice President GV Selvam, graced the occasion.
