Keep maximum rate under GST at 18 per cent: Stalin
DMK working president MK Stalin has urged the Centre to peg the maximum limit for tax volume under the GST at 18 per cent, instead of reducing it every time during the council meetings. In a sarcastic remark, Stalin said, “It is an agmark truth that the decision was taken keeping in mind the ensuing Gujarat polls and not the hardships faced by the people.”

Asking the Centre to own up responsibility for the death and loss of livelihood due to demonetisation and GST confusion, the DMK working president said that such changes made according to the government’s needs vindicate his party’s allegation that the Centre has infringed upon the rights of states. Referring to his earlier demand, seeking to defer the implementation of the GST, he said that it was unfortunate that the Centre did not pay heed to even the constructive views of the Opposition parties.
He also drew the attention of the public to the differing views in the ruling BJP and administration on this issue. Stalin said the Centre should take all possible efforts to fix the maximum Goods and Services Tax on products at 18 per cent instead of convening the GST council to reduce the tax slab every time.
