Earlier, there was no proper seating facility available in the canteen and people had to stand and take their food. But now a proper restaurant like set up had been made with proper chairs and tables. Kanagaraj inaugurated the canteen and then interacted with the staff. While addressing the media, he said that the renovated prison canteen offers quality food at lower cost. Prisoners are given training in catering technology and then are employed for the cooking purpose.

About 20 percentage of the profit from the canteen is paid as salary for them. The important objective of the canteen is to instil a sense of confidence and positive attitude in prisoners so that they can survive with a good job even after they are released from the prison. He also said that various other jobs are being carried out in prisons and in 2016, the total production at the prisons stood at Rs 37 crore.
