Alleging that there were numerous violations in the tender floated on March 25, 2017, Stalin accused the government of awarding the tender to a firm which sells single phase meters at Rs 495 per piece, declining the lowest bidder from Uttar Pradesh, who had priced the same at Rs 453 per piece.

Wondering who had pressurised the TANGEDCO to decline the lowest bid and procure 29.88 lakh meters at a higher price, the Leader of Opposition, in a statement, said that it was condemnable that state run electricity firm has come forward to procure them at a higher price, which would push an already debt-ridden corporation into deeper debt and create loss to the consumers.

The award of the tender, overlooking the concerns of the TANGEDCO and consumers, has raised a question as to who stands to benefit from it, Stalin remarked. Referring to the stay granted to the tender by the Madras High Court on a petition moved by the lowest bidder, Stalin also asked the regime not to sacrifice the TANGEDCO by engaging in such irregularities.
