After nearly a week, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) services between Mettupalayam and Coonoor resumed on Wednesday.

The train service remained suspended as heavy rain that battered the hills triggered landslides along the NMR track between Kallar to Hill Grove railway station. Uprooted trees and boulders blocked the track preventing the movement of the train. Restoration works were carried out in full swing by removing the boulders and fallen trees on the tracks. The damaged railings were also repaired under the supervision of engineers.

Just as the restoration works were nearing completion on Monday, another boulder fell on the track again near Hill Grove delaying further the resumption of service by a day.

Finally, the restoration works were completed on Tuesday and the NMR began to chug through the mountainous track from Wednesday, much to the merriment of tourists visiting the hills. The train began its journey from Mettupalayam and reached Coonoor and was also operated in the return direction.
