The agitators from various fishing hamlets like Nochikuppam, Mattankuppam, Nadukuppam, Oorur Kuppam and other areas gathered near the Light House on Friday morning to conduct a rally towards the Secretariat.
However, police personnel stopped and took them to Chepauk and granted them permission to hold demonstration.
The fishermen who raised slogans against the government, said that they were always being neglected in all issues. “After Ockhi, normal life in Kanniyakumari district is affected and more number of fishermen are missing. However, the government has not taken any appropriate measure,” said an agitator.
K Bharathi, president of South Indian Fishermen Association, said, “The government should speed up relief works on a war-footing.
While the Kerala government has announced a solatium of Rs 20 lakh, Tamil Nadu has announced only Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased.” He stressed that the solatium should be increased to Rs 20 lakh.
Later, a few representatives met Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and submitted a memorandum.
The representatives also said that the CM has assured them of proper action with necessary help from the Union government.
