Weathermen say that there is no sign of a new low-pressure forming over the Bay of Bengal and that there was only one rainy day (above 2.5 mm) in the city from December 1 to till now.

Going by the data available with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Meenambakkam received 962.2 mm of rains from October 1 to December 15, while Numgambakkam recorded 977.7 mm. They pointed out that the city had good rain in November. SP Thambi, deputy director general of Meteorology, told DT Next, “We cannot come to any conclusion that North East Monsoon (NEM) will withdraw soon. Models also indicate the possibility of isolated rainfall across the state for the next five days.” The NEM will usually extend until December end, he added. “North-East Monsoon continues to be in a suppressed phase over North Tamil Nadu with not much rainfall happening since the turn of December and nothing major expected for the next couple of days at least,” said K Srikanth, a weather-blogger of Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikkalam.
