Governor Banwarilal Purohit continues action in Salem, receives petitions from public
Amid protests by opposition parties, Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Monday toured Salem, receiving grievance petitions from public, launching rallies and wielded the broom as part of the Swachh Bharat campaign.

His itinerary for the day was similar to his visits in other districts including Coimbatore, Cuddalore and Kanniyakumari. After inaugurating the Indian Social Science Congress at Periyar University, the Governor swept the garbage, inspected ‘Pasumai Veedu’ and toilets built at Thindamangalam near Omalur as part of the central government’s clean India campaign. At the new bus stand, Banwarilal gave awareness pamphlets against open defecation.
The governor also asked them to read out the contents in the pamphlets to ensure that the message is understood. In the later hours of the day, the governor patiently received petitions for over two hours from the public, who queued up to meet him and air their grievances. Official sources said that the governor had received about 84 petitions from the public. District Collector Rohini R Bhajibhakare, City Police Commissioner Shankar, Superintendent of Police P Rajan, District Revenue Officer R Sugumar and other officials accompanied him during his visit.
Meanwhile, members of various opposition parties including the DMK, left parties and VCK staged black flag protests near the Collector’s office against the visit of Governor in Salem. The activists shouted slogans and said that the governor has been meddling in the affairs of the state government, which is against state autonomy.
Purohit insists on need to work for quality, innovation in education
After inaugurating the 41st edition of India Social Science Congress organised by Periyar University and Indian Academy of Social Sciences on Monday, the governor said there is an urgent need to work for quality and innovation in the education sector to meet out the opportunities, improve employability and handle emerging challenges. He also emphasized on the need to work for quality and innovation in the educational sector to improve employability of the younger generation.
The five day congress dwelt on the theme Indian University Education System: A Critical Appraisal. Time has come to create a second wave of institution building and of excellence in the field of education, research and capacity building.
“We need an education system that is modern, liberal and can adapt to the needs of a changing society and evolving economy ,” he said. Banwarilal Purohit said that education considered to be an instrument for societal change and it should focus on developing cognitive capabilities, tolerance to withstand multicultural impulses and understanding of diversity. It should also prepare the younger generation to face the complex realities of globalization, he added.
Sunil Paliwal, Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education, K S Sharma, president, Indian Academy of Social Sciences and its general secretary NP Chaubey and A Manivannan, Registrar of Periyar University were among those, who participated in the event.
