Namakkal, Salem, Kovai cops rewarded for cracking ATM heists

Police officers from Coimbatore city, Salem city and Namakkal district were bestowed with cash rewards and commendation certificates by Director General of Police TK Rajendran and ADGP Vijayakumar in Chennai on Monday for cracking ATM heist cases, with the arrest of an eight-member north Indian gang.

K Periaiah, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, T Perumal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Coimbatore City, A Arularasu, Superintendent of Police, Namakkal District and S Senthil, ADSP, Nammakal, were honoured.

The DGP also gave cash reward to private security guard Akbar Ali, who was manning the toll plaza at Keerambur in Namakkal. The Namakkal district sniffer dog Poigai also came in for appreciation for helping the cops to find the hideout of the criminals.

On the night of December 9, three ATMs were broken open and over Rs 30 lakh was stolen by burglars in Coimbatore.

Police then arrested three persons, who abandoned their car and escaped to Namakkal district.

The police teams secured them after a co-ordinated search with the help of people of Bommai Kuttaimedu by using an Helicam and sniffer dog Poigai.

Two other accused persons were caught by intercepting their car at Keerambur toll plaza in Namakkal and three others in a lorry in Salem district. After interrogation, police recovered Rs 3 lakh, a revolver, gas cylinders and other accessories used to break open ATMs.

It came to light that the accused persons, hailing from Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh were also involved in ATM burglary cases in Madurai, Tiruppur and Vellore.

They were also involved in 11 such offences in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka States.

Police from Karnataka and other states have arrived in Coimbatore to gather information about the criminals to establish their involvement in similar ATM heists reported there.
