“Merely appointing a police person is not enough, but training and orientation makes him child- friendly,” stated Justice Vimala, while delivering her key note address at the event. The Tamil Nadu Police, under the aegis of the Juvenile Justice Committee of Madras High Court, launched the programme to train all its child welfare police officers, designated as per the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act 2015. This training is part of the child friendly police’s initiative of the Tamil Nadu Police. It may be noted that 1498 Inspectors were appointed as child welfare officers in police stations across the state to implement the Act.
To create awareness about the Act, the training regarding its implementation was organised in centres at 13 locations, under the supervision of Tamil Nadu Police Training College. Stating that addiction is becoming a major issue with children today, and that it is time serious measures are taken to look into de-addiction programmes for children, Justice Manikumar, Chairperson of Juvenile Justice Committee of the Madras High Court, said, “Crimes by children are now on the rise and often, children indulge in the same without even understanding the seriousness.” DGP T K Rajendran called his police team to respect the children as their own and to bring a good name to the police force by being child friendly.
Following the launch of a child friendly police station in Salem, the state police is planning to set up child-friendly police stations in all its All Women Police Stations in the first phase, he added.
