Kamaraj awards for Class 10,12 students

School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan on Wednesday announced that around 960 students in Tamil medium schools from across the state will be eligible to bag the ‘Kamarajar award’ for academic excellence.

Fifteen students each, from Class 10 and 12, will be selected in each district and will be given a cash reward of Rs 10,000 and 20,000 respectively. The award will be given to students from government and government-aided schools every year, on the occasion of the late leader’s birthday. A fund of Rs 1,45,30,000 has been allocated for this, added the minister.

To select eligible candidates, an average of 60 marks will be calculated from the public examination marks, while the remaining 40 marks will be allocated for extracurricular activities, including awards in cultural activities like music, dance and literary achievements. Prizes for excellence in sports will also be included. Marks will also be awarded for the involvement of students in science clubs, NCC, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides.   

Moreover, the state government is also introducing a scheme by which 100 students will be sent to other countries, to learn about science, technology, arts and literature. The students will be divided into four groups of 25 students. When it comes to science, the selected students will get to travel to China, South Korea, Japan, America, Switzerland and Germany. 

Those selected in the field of technology will also travel to the same countries. For arts, the students will get to visit Thailand, China, Japan, Cambodia, Greece, Egypt, France and Italy.  To understand literature better, the students will travel to Russia, England, France, Norway, Sweden and European countries. The minister announced that a fund of Rs 3 crore has been allotted for this.
