Trust plans ‘home’ for newly-wed inter-caste couple
In an attempt to curb honour killing because of inter-caste marriages (without family support), the ‘Aathalinaal Kaadhal Seiveer’ trust has come up with a plan of constructing a dedicated building in an area of 2,400 sq ft for these couple to stay safe until they feel safe and confident to face the world. The trust was registered on December 18.

“Unsafe shelter is one of the causes for newly-wed inter-caste couple to fall a prey to honour killing. Therefore, we decided to provide them a safe place to live,” Managing Trustee, advocate Se Ku (S Gunasekaran), said.
Gunasekaran said that the trust is the part of Ambedkar, Periyar Kalappu Thirumanam Seithor Nala Sangam (Ambedkar, Periyar Inter caste couple welfare Association) which has been helping inter-caste couples across the state for eight years. “So far, association members have been giving accommodation at their houses and this causes inconvenience in due course of time. Therefore, they decided to go ahead with a dedicated shelter and wanted it to be in Tiruchy,” he said.
Later, Tamil Sudar, one of the trust members, offered their family property. “The building can house at least four couple and they would be given all support. We have 300 advocates in the team and they would provide proper legal guidance,” said Gunasekaran.
The house will have a full time volunteer. As soon as the couple decides to get out of the house, they can contact the association members or house volunteer, whose number is displayed in the website: tnicm.org
“The couple should have age-proof and ID proof and our volunteers would help get their marriages registered,” Gunasekaran added.
