Black flag protest seeking a subway at RoB at Peelamedu

Irked residents of Peelamedu near Coimbatore hoisted black flags atop their houses on Thursday, as a mark of protest against the inordinate delay in building a subway at a rail over bridge. They said that they were forced to brave heavy traffic to cross over, in the absence of a subway.

The bridge, whose construction was delayed by almost six years due to issues in land acquisition, was finally thrown open for traffic, just a month ago.

Though subways are built for rail over bridges coming up in crowded city areas, the residents claimed that their neighbourhood had turned out to be an exception. Since 2011, the local people were demanding the railways to build a sub way at the spot.

Hundreds of residents living in areas such as Murugan Nagar, Hudco Colony, RV Layout, Kattapomman Street, Kallimedu Street, Sriram Nagar, Sengaliappan Nagar and Indragandhi Street hoisted black flags atop their houses, on Thursday.

“About 600 families walk over the bridge to reach a PDS shop. School children are most affected as they have to cross the railway tracks risking their lives and sometimes end up being fined by the railways,” said Gopal, president of Peelamedu Consumer Voice.

The residents threatened to hold a rail roko, if there is further delay in taking up the construction of a sub way.
