After preliminary inquiries, police said that the accused Ganesh (28) of Anna Nagar had collected Rs 16 lakh from a candidate on the promise of getting him the lecturer job.
A hunt has been launched for another key accused Shaik Dawood Naser (35), a city-based software engineer, who manipulated the data in the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheet, while releasing the shortlisted candidates list for certificate verification.
Police said that Naser worked as a programmer at Delhi-based Datatec Methodex Private Limited’s Chennai branch. Ganesh has been arrested based on a complaint by Uma, a member secretary in the TRB.
However, the CCB sleuths see a bigger network behind the scam with many people from TRB and a Delhi-based firm having been involved and a sum up to Rs 30 lakh received to alter the marks in order to favour over 200 applicants, particularly from regions such as Salem, Namakkal, Cuddalore and Erode.
A Facebook group called ‘TRB Government Polytechnic Lecturer Recruitment’ has the details of the candidates, who have qualified for certificate verification with forged marks with a maximum number of 70 in Electrical and Electronics Engineering branch.
Mechanical engineering branch has 50 shortlisted candidates with forged marks.
Soon after doubts were raised about the written exam results, TRB withdrew the results and released all 1.33 lakh answer scripts in public domain.
