Increase Minimum Support Price for paddy: Parties

Political parties like the Left, PMK and MDMK slammed the state government for not increasing the incentives for paddy. Even though the Centre has fixed the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for fine variety and common variety of paddy at Rs 1,590 and Rs 1,550 respectively, they demand that the state government should fix MSP up to Rs 3,000 per quintal (100 kg).

PMK youth wing leader and former union minister, Anbumani Ramadoss, in a statement, said, “The state government has once again proved that it is ineffective, and it has not given importance to the farming community. This bears testimony to the fact that the government has fixed incentives at a mere Rs 70 and Rs 50 for fine and common varieties respectively.”

Similarly, the CPI has condemned the government for not raising cost of the MSP. “The government should sense the fact that the cost of production has gradually been increasing and considering this, it should hike the MSP up to Rs 3,000,” said V Duraimanickam, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, which is affiliated to the CPI.

MDMK General Secretary, Vaiko has blamed the Centre for not fixing enough MSP for paddy, as farmers suffered a lot in terms of all aspects like cost of cultivation, loan and drought.
