Observing that the ruling dispensation was getting requests from all quarters for premature release of lifers, Palaniswami said that the state would take steps to release such convicts, who had completed over a decade, as per the provisions in law and prison manual –on humanitarian grounds.
Nagai MLA Ansari, when contacted by DT Next, welcomed the initiative of the government and pointed out that it would win the hearts of thousands of families affected by their kin’s conviction. “The measure should benefit all prisoners and the cases they were involved in should not have any bearing on the goodwill gesture extended by the state,” the leader of Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi urged.
Along with Ansari, Tamilaga Kongu Ilaignar Peravai leader Thaniyarasu and Mukkulathor Pulippadai leader Karunaas had jointly made a representation to the Chief Minister in this regard. The trio had been vocal in voicing the premature release in the Assembly as well, while thanking other fellow legislators, who stood for the cause in the House.
Naam Tamilar Katchi coordinator Seeman too had welcomed the announcement of the state and pressed for similar demands.
