National award for late TNAU professor
Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) have conferred the late professor S Robin with ‘First Prof EA Siddiq Biennial Award’ for his outstanding contribution to rice breeding. He is the first South Indian to receive a national award for rice breeding.

S Robin, who was Dean, School of Post Graduate Studies at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore, was behind introduction of several new rice varieties. He developed drought resistant and high yielding varieties. He was also the recipient of Tamil Nadu Scientist Award posthumously.
On April 14, 2017, Robin fainted while delivering a presentation at a national conference on stage and died the same day of multiple brain hemorrhage. A TNAU faculty said over the last few years, Robin was researching on isolating specific genes and DNA giving rice its drought resistant qualities.
“He always strived to work for the welfare of farmers through his innovations. He used to say that he wanted to make rice available for Rs 10 a kg,” recalled a TNAU faculty. The award would be presented on February 9
