Why not privatise transport corporations, HC asks State
Even as the Madras High Court on Monday refused to vacate the interim stay declaring the flash strike by transport workers as ‘illegal’ and against ‘public interest’, it slammed the government for failing to pay the legitimate dues pending to both current as well as retired employees saying ‘privatise the transport corporation if you are unable to run it effectively’.

The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose made the oral observation of privatising the corporation after Advocate General Vijay Narayan submitted that the Corporation is in the red and efforts were on to mobilise funds to pay the dues to the workers.
This was in response to the counsels appearing for the unions submitting that the strike was just not about wages but also about non-release of provident fund deducted from the wages of workers, as also other dues for which deductions were made from the salaries/wages of the workers.
However, the bench on making it clear that it is not inclined to vacate the interim order restraining Transport Corporation workers from taking recourse to strike, considering the predicament of the public, who are constrained to use transport services, merely modified the order to the extent that no worker shall be terminated without obtaining the Court’s permission.
