Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a money laundering case under FERA against Dinakaran in 1996 and he in turn had filed a petition at Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (Economic Offences-II), Egmore, at Allikulam.

But, due to opposition from Government pleader, the court had dismissed his petition. Challenging the order of lower court, Dinakaran filed a review petition at Chennai High Court. As Justice, S Vimala, who heard the case was transferred to Madurai Bench, the judgment was pronounced in Madurai.
