Tangedco, REC ink 10,453 crore loan pact

The Tangedco and Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) on Friday signed an agreement for loan assistance worth Rs 10,453 crore for the setting up of two thermal power stations at Udangudi in Thoothukudi district.

The coal based supercritical power projects would generate 660 MW of power each and the loan assistance from the REC would ensure timely implementation of the projects. It was signed in the presence of Electricity Minister P Thangamani, REC CMD PV Ramesh and principal secretary M Saikumar. The plant would be set up by the BHEL, a Tangedco press release here said.

The CMD and Directors of Tangedco and Tantransco lauded the REC for their support in development of power sector in the state. CMD REC stated that such huge investment would not only improve the power infrastructure of state power utilities, but also improve their financial as well as operational performance.

Thangamani, who spoke on the occasion, said during the six years, the state government had followed an apt road map to become a power surplus state. 

A power capacity of 10,673 MW had been added to the grid since 2011 and the state had emerged as the leader in harnessing renewable energy sources. All efforts are being made to achieve break-even soon, he said.
