In the first accident, a group of residents from Mathur village working at an herbal farm at Alagapuri village in the district, were traveling by a mini-van with loads of herbs. Two were sitting on the front along with driver Anbarasu. Five others were sitting on rear of the vehicle.
When the van neared Kadaneri post near Srivilliputhur, a tipper lorry coming in the opposite direction hit with the mini-van pushing it off the road into a pit. In the impact, four persons, Thangam, Mariammal, Lurdhu and Karuppayammal, died on the spot.
Santhi, Kaliammal, Chithra and Anbarasu, who suffered grievous injuries, were rushed to the hospital. Though Santhi was rushed to Madurai, she succumbed to injuries on the way.
Virudhunagar SP, Rajarajan, inspected the accident spot. Nathampatti police have registered a case against tipper lorry driver Mahalingam and secured him.
In the second accident, four persons from Kollam in Kerala were returning home by a car from Nagoor. While they were passing through the Madurai-Sengottai National Highway Road, the driver lost control and the car hit a tree near Srivilliputhur.
While Rahim Kutty and Abdul Raguman died on the spot, two other inmates, who had sustained serious injuries, were rushed to hospital in Madurai. Krishnankovil police have booked a case and are investigating.
