Devadanapatti sub-inspector suspended after video of him taking bribe goes viral

A sub-inspector of Devadanapatti was arrested on charges of graft on Wednesday after a video of him taking a bribe went viral in the social media.It is said that he had forced a cab driver to give him a bribe, near the Ghat Road police checkpost near Devadanapatti in Theni district.

The cab driver was taking Kerala tourists from Kodaikanal to the Dindigul Railway station. He was stopped by the police at the Ghat Road check post. When he came out of the car, he was asked to meet sub-inspector Varadhan.

When the driver approached Varadhan, he demanded bribe to allow him to cross the check post.

Though the cabbie refused, the SI was very persistent. The driver wanted to expose the unlawful activity. and took a video of the conversation between him and the SI. In the video, the SI is seen negotiating for the bribe and finally settled for Rs 50. When the cabbie tried to argue, the SI replied that even jeeps that cross the check post give him Rs 100 per day.

After the negotiation, the SI is seen placing the notes under a sheet. The SI further tells the cabbie that he need not pay on his return trip as he would be present at the check post.

The video went viral in social media and when it was taken to the notice of Theni SP, V Baskaran, he issued a suspension order for Varadhan.
