Thirumoorthy dam opened for irrigation

Minister for Animal Husbandry Udumalai K Radhakrishnan on Wednesday opened the shutters of Thirumoorthy dam to release water for irrigating 94, 521 acres spread over in Tirupur and Coimbatore districts.

Water has been released following persistent demands from farmers to save the standing crops, said PWD officials. The release was ordered by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy on Tuesday. It is said that from Thursday, 3,800 million cubic feet of water will be released in the first zone PAP (Parambikulam-Aliyar project). Official said that water release for two wettings would benefit 27,446 acres in Udumalpet taluk, 7,496 acres in Madathukulam taluk, 8,395 acres in Dharapuram, 7,887 acres in Palladam, 11,309 acres in Tirupur taluk, 15,392 acres in Kangayam, 12,567 acres in Pollachi taluk, and 4,033 acres in Sulur taluk.

Among those who were present included Tirupur District Collector KS Palanisamy, Member of Parliament C Mahendran, MLA’s A Natarajan (Palladam), KN Vijayakumar (Tirupur North), Kanagaraj (Sulur), Jayaramakrishnan (Madathukulam) and officials from district administration and Public Works Department.
