Rameswaram is one of the holy sites in the state and thousands of devotees from across the country visit the temple daily and almost all the devotees take holy dip in all the wells at the temple.

There are 22 ‘Holy Wells’ called Theertha Kinaru. Out of them, paths leading to the first six ‘Holy Wells’ are narrow.

Recently a case was filed at the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court to close the six ‘Holy Wells’ and to shift them to some other place.  The Court too had directed the HR&CE department and the temple authorities to close the wells and to dig six new wells.

Keeping in line with the court order, the temple administration had closed the first six ‘Holy Wells’. Following this, the temple authorities identified the place in the northern part of the second praharam, for digging six new wells. Foundation stone was laid and works begun at an estimated cost of Rs 12 lakh for the new wells.

Joint Commissioner of Ramanathaswamy Temple, GC Mangaiyarkarasi, said that the wells would be 16-foot deep and would be opened in a month.
